There are programmes you attend and forget. And then there are experiences that quietly shift something inside you — the way you see your work, your role, and what is actually possible.
The Nelson Mandela Global Academy for Social Change Leadership was the second kind for me.
As President of Let's Do It World, a global movement active in 190+ countries, I have spent years coordinating large-scale action across borders, cultures, and contexts. I know what it takes to build something that lasts. And yet, sitting in a room with changemakers from every corner of the world, I was reminded of something I believe deeply but don't always get the chance to feel so vividly: that cooperation and shared values are not just nice words. They are the very foundation and fuel of everything meaningful we create together.
The Academy is built on Nelson Mandela's legacy of resilience, humility, and commitment to unity — and it shows in every session, every conversation, every connection made.
It is delivered by the UN System Staff College in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and seven leading universities across the globe, from the American University of Beirut to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy to the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at the University of Cape Town. It is rigorous without being rigid, and deeply human without losing its ambition.
What stays with me most is not the curriculum — though it was excellent — but what happened between sessions. The unscripted conversations. The honesty. The energy of being surrounded by people who see the same broken things in the world and have not given up on fixing them.
That diversity of voices, backgrounds, and lived experiences was not just inspiring — it was clarifying. It reminded me that systems change is never a solo act. Building real alliances — not just networks, but communities of shared purpose — is what makes global impact possible and sustainable.
Alessandra Rangel Castillo, who leads Academic Partnerships at the UN System Staff College, captures the spirit of the Academy with precision: the world needs individuals with agency, who think independently, resist divisive narratives, and demonstrate leadership by enabling others to contribute solutions. That is exactly what the Academy is designed to cultivate — an environment where changemakers feel empowered, connected, and inspired to act.
The next edition runs from 1 October 2026 to 28 January 2027. It is designed for professionals with at least five years of experience in social impact, policy, development, or leadership — people who are ready to go deeper, not just wider.
Over four months and more than 100 hours of live sessions, leadership dialogues, competency labs, and global networking exchanges, it offers something that is increasingly rare: genuine space to think, grow, and build relationships that last beyond a conference room.
I left with more hope than I arrived with. In a world that can feel overwhelming, being in a room full of people who refuse to give up is its own kind of fuel. If anyone in our network is ready for that experience, I encourage them wholeheartedly to apply.
