Tallinn, Estonia, June 5, 2023: The fourth Digital Cleanup Day held March 19 2023 organized by Let’s Do It World (“LDIW”) brought nearly 400 000 participants from 108 countries whom together deleted nearly 7M GB of data. By deleting the data, 1.7M kg of CO2 is saved yearly. Of the 108 countries participated, most data was deleted by participants from France, Indonesia, United States, Estonia and United Kingdom.

“Our digital lifestyles have a huge CO2 footprint and one way to curb it is to delete unnecessary files. By bringing people together for the Digital Cleanup Day 2023 we not only saved millions of tons of CO2, but also raised awareness. Creating good habits online, to clean up after yourself, is becoming increasingly important due to new technological possibilities such as A platforms,” noted Anneli Ohvril, CEO of LDIW.

Digital Cleanup Day was brought to life due to increasing footprint of our online lives. As internet and its supportive systems produce 1 billion ton of CO2 every year and 75% of the total digital footprint is due to individual action, there is clear and easily preventable climate footprint. Digital Cleanup Day campaign works through inviting people and businesses to focus at least one day of the year to cleaning their virtual storage space from waste – materials that will never be used again. Thus, Let's Do It World has created the initiative Digital Cleanup Day that fills the most important gap - enabling a greener future without contributing to climate warming nor destroying life on Earth.
