On 20 September, something happens that doesn't happen anywhere else on the calendar: millions of people, in nearly every country on earth, step outside on the same day and do the same simple thing – they clean up. No single organisation could ever pull that off alone! It happens because ordinary people decide, one by one, that this is the day they show up.
It's easy to look at a global waste crisis and feel like one person, one bag of litter, can't possibly make a dent. But World Cleanup Day was built on the opposite belief – and the numbers back it up. In 2025 alone, the movement brought together volunteers across more than 190 countries, part of a movement that has now engaged well over 139 million people worldwide since it began. Every one of those numbers started as a single person deciding to take part.
The movement works toward what's known as the "5% rule": once roughly 5% of a population takes visible, coordinated action, it's enough to tip an entire society toward a new norm. Reaching that tipping point isn't about a handful of dedicated organisers doing more – it's about more people doing something, however small. Your one hour on one street is part of the exact mechanism that turns a clean-up into lasting change.
1. Find an event near you. Head to the World Cleanup Day map and search by location, or find your country and register directly on the country map. Most cities and regions already have registered clean-ups you can simply turn up to.
2. Register as a volunteer. Signing up isn't just a formality, as it lets World Cleanup Day organisers know how many people to expect, so they can prepare enough bags, gloves, and safety equipment for everyone.
3. No event near you? Start one! You don't need to be an expert or run a large organisation. Pick a specific spot – a park, a beach, a riverbank, a roadside stretch, even your own street – and register it. It'll appear on the global map, and the World Cleanup Day Toolbox gives you everything you need to plan it, from safety guidance to ready-made marketing materials.
4. Come prepared. Most events provide gloves and bags, but it's worth bringing your own reusable gloves, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and water. Sorting what you collect – separating recyclables from general waste – makes the data from the day genuinely useful.
5. Spread the word. Tell your neighbours, your school, your workplace. Share it on social media using #WorldCleanupDay. Every person you bring along multiplies what a single day can achieve – and media attention is part of what turns local clean-ups into the kind of pressure that gets governments to act.

You don't need to organise a national campaign or convince a government to change its mind. You just need to show up – for one hour, on one street, with one bag. That's how every leader in this movement started, and it's how every one of the millions who join this September will start too. This isn't a spectator's day. It's a participant's day, and there's a place in it for you.
