Press Release: Tallinn, Estonia, 25 August 2025

In just under a month from now, on 20 September, World Cleanup Day will take place again, with this year's coordination centre located in Kyiv.

Heidi Solba, President and CEO of Let's Do It World NGO, said that wars and conflicts are temporary, but environmental needs remain. "Ukraine's capital Kyiv has been chosen as this year's World Cleanup centre precisely because environmental issues can also be part of creating peace. Ukrainian people can contribute to change through positive environmental action."

World Cleanup Day is one of the world's largest environment-related campaigns that unites the entire planet, led by the Let’s Do It World network. This year, together with Ukraine, the goal is to engage 30 million people worldwide in cleanup efforts. According to Solba, through conscious environmental action, one can contribute to improving both local and global environments. "In Ukraine, 407,000 people participated in the action last year. People were able to do good for their country and community, and perhaps even forget for a few moments that there is a war going on."

Iuliia Markhel, leader of Let's Do It Ukraine, elaborates: "The environment knows no borders, and its preservation is our shared responsibility. Ecosystems destroyed by war, fires, and floods threaten our health, land, water, air, and food — and ultimately our safety. By uniting our efforts during World Cleanup Day, we care for nature, foster a culture of responsibility, and make the world cleaner, safer, and more sustainable for ourselves and future generations".

The Let's Do It World network includes environmental movements from 164 countries, with the organisation's headquarters located in Estonia. In the last seven World Cleanup Days, a total of 114 million people from 211 countries have participated globally. The movement that began in Estonia has spread around the globe through years of work, and the United Nations now recognises World Cleanup Day on its International Calendar of Days and Weeks.

According to Heidi Solba, World Cleanup Day helps create systematic change in society and build cooperation for green solutions. "It's not difficult to find five friends, clean together for a few hours, and then enjoy what has been accomplished. A cleaner environment positively affects us all, both mentally and physically."

On World Cleanup Day, 20 September, a communication and media centre will be set up at the Kyiv coordination centre. From there, a studio broadcast will provide an overview and updates on the global cleanup as it develops, through Let’s Do It World channels. The nine-hour live broadcast will feature experts in post-war environmental restoration, waste management professionals, circular economy specialists, and UN and EU representatives. The programme will open with greetings from Estonian President Alar Karis.
